The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
At first, The Scorpio Races confused me a bit. An island that has carnivorous horses coming out of the water, only to be caught and then raced? What? But once I came to terms that this is just a reality of the setting, I actually came to love this book.
This novel takes place on an Island called Thisby where, every November, The Scorpio Races take place. The POVs alter between two characters, Puck and Sean, who each have their own reasons for participating in these dangerous races where people are known to die. What I enjoyed most about this book was the how intensely Puck and Sean feel about the island and their respective horses even though it is often a dangerous place to live. They’re both such determined and strong characters that it made for an enjoyable read from start to finish.
And Puck is just so feisty, it’s impossible not to love her.
